Kita glided over the column of ravagers, moving slowly out of the mountains. It’d taken hours to reach the ravager camp and many more to get them moving. The light of dawn was peeking over the mountain peaks, and they still had a long way to go.

As Kita moved along the seemingly endless line, she talked to her Commandos to get to know them. Kita prided herself on knowing all the names, faces, and history of those who served her.

She’d sent the Humans back with a squad of Commandos to protect them and tell Woo what to expect.

“Hey, Mom!” Ocean called as she flew next to Kita.

“Hey, Pretty Parrot. How’s your classes coming?”

In Ocean’s hand was her tablet. “I finished my lessons, and I’m working on my project, and I keep getting an error message that my atomic bonds aren’t correct. I’ve looked but can’t find what’s wrong.”

“Let me have a look.”

Kita rolled and glided under Ocean. She took the tablet and studied the structure of the protein. Nothing was obvious. She rotated the protein, zoomed in to see the center, and found the error.

“You have a single bond selected, and it should be a double. I would also check your error messages so they’re specific about what’s wrong. It takes more programming, but it’ll save you time in the long run.”

Ocean looked at the tablet and frowned. “How come I didn’t see that?”

“Having another set of eyes helps. I’m impressed and proud of you. Your bone shaping is awesome. I’m curious to know how you did it.”

Ocean’s smile was only matched by her blush. “It wasn’t hard. I modified Amber’s dirt organelles to produce bionanites that interact with bone calcium and other minerals.”

Kita winked. “But no one thought of it before you. I was going to save this for your birthday, but I think you’re ready now.” She booped Ocean’s nose. “I’m giving you a computer like I have. When it’s finished, you can move your programs over. I’ll send you some of my programs—including the modeling program so you don’t have to wait an hour for results.”

“You mean it?” Ocean squealed. She hugged Kita. “Oh, thanks, Mom. You’re the best.”

“You’ve earned it,” praised Kita. “I’m excited to see what you come up with. When it’s done, the operating system will appear in your head. You’ll have a local wireless connection. You can make a better one to connect to Roost.”

“Oh, I can’t wait!”

“The Emperor will be proud,” said Fiend, coming up next to Ocean.

“What she and I create doesn’t belong to the Emperor,” retorted Kita. “We’re not using UEE resources to design and create. What we make belongs to us.”

“It is something we’ll need to discuss.”

“I’ve proven it can be done. They can figure it out. The problem is, they need to widen their knowledge base.”

“Yeah. Lots of what Mom has taught me isn’t in the UEE archives,” said Ocean.

“And where are you getting this knowledge, Raven?”

“I have it. It’s mine. If the Emperor wants it, he will have to fight me for it.
